SDMX

XML allows any organisation to harness its power by defining an XML dialect for a specific purpose. An XML dialect consists of a set of tags specially designed in order to accommodate the needs of the organization in question.

Files that follow this dialect can then be exchanged across external parties provided that the standard (the set of XML tags) is available for the public. There are many XML dialects at the moment targeted at different areas (mathematics, chemistry, user interfaces, 3D scenes) developed by the respective organizations.

One such XML dialect is the SDMX standard. SDMX stands for Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange and as the name suggests is targeted at the exchange of datasets in the contexts of statistics. SDMX is a joint effort by prominent sponsors such as the Bank for International Settlements, the European Central Bank, the Statistical Office of European Communities (Eurostat), the International Monetary Fund , the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the United Nations (Statistics Division) and the World Bank.

SDMX became lately an official ISO standard.

You can consult the wikipedia entry on SDMX for additional information.

Agilis has developed sophisticated tools for processing SDMX files, converting them to different formats (including legacy ones) and visualizing them. Training for the SDMX standard and associated software tools is also offered.
